Moderate but deep earthquake of magnitude 5.1 22 km northwest of Ambunti, Papua New Guinea

5.1 earthquake April 27 05:08 (GMT +10)

5.1 earthquake April 27 05:08 (GMT +10)

The RaspberryShake Citizen Seismograph Network reported a magnitude 5.1 earthquake in Papua New Guinea near Ambunti, Ambunti-Dreikikir, East Sepik Province, just 16 minutes ago. The earthquake struck early in the morning of Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at 5:08 a.m. local time at an intermediate depth of 126.7 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies release their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3. Other agencies reported the same earthquake, including the German Geoscience Research Center (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3 and the National Seismic Monitoring Network (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.4 in France.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused significant damage, but was likely felt by many people as a slight vibration in the epicenter area.
Weak tremors could have been felt at Ambunti (pop. 2,100) located 22 km from the epicenter.
Other towns near the epicenter where the quake could have been felt as a very weak tremor include Aitape (pop. 5,500) located 111 km from the epicenter, Wewak (pop. 18,200) 121 km away and Wewak (pop. 18,200) 121 kilometers away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if these change and will follow up if other major earthquake news becomes available. If you are in the area, please let us know about your experience through our reporting mechanism, online or through our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the world who wants to learn more about this earthquake.

[More info]

Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the earthquake ruptured over an area of approx. 16 kilometers2 (= 6 square miles) as a first order estimate. The length of the rupture zone was therefore probably about 7 km (4 mi).
Aftershocks generally occur during the days and weeks following the earthquake at or near the same fault, at distances of up to approx. twice the length of the rupture zone.
The often largely linear arrangement of aftershock epicentres encompasses the main shock rupture zone (check on the map below to verify).

Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 earthquakes) (up to now, frequently updated)

So far, no aftershocks have been recorded.
